Winter ’19: Trends, Top 10s

Happy New Year! It’s been a couple of years since I posted a “Year In Review” article, so here it goes…

Music-wise, it was a rough year for DJs from a new music perspective. The increasing popularity of the Trap / Mumble Rap genre (Drake, Travis Scott, Post Malone, etc.) make those artist’s hits pretty much useless for getting anyone on the dance floor.  With the exception of a couple of Cardi B tracks and the 2017 Bruno Mars hit that was remixed and re-released with Cardi B (“Finesse”), there were few new tracks that worked for dance floors. The only new 2018 song that hit my annual Top request list was the Ed Sheeran ballad “Perfect” which was by far, the most popular first dance song of the year. Fortunately like most years, guests still love the newer and older classic hits, as well as the group type dance songs. This was the first year since I’ve been keeping track – that’s going back to 1993 – that the Top 4 requests were all “group or line dance” hits. I still can’t believe the “Chicken Dance” makes the Top 10 almost every year. Love them or hate them, here are 2018’s Top 10 requests at my weddings last year:

While we’re on the subject of music, here are a few things your DJ can and should be doing besides playing music from our friends at Wedding Wire:

Here’s a great article on what’s hot and not for 2019 from the folks at SheFinds:

One of the biggest trends I noticed in 2018 was the increase in using pets as part of the wedding party. Here’s a cute photo of “Jacob The Ring Dog” from a wedding I worked with photographer Ashley Durham last August. (Photo by Randy + Ashley Studios) http://www.randyandashley.com
